Richmond upon Thames College appointed 3BM Studio to deliver design consultation for the delivery of a new set of fitness facilities as an extension to the existing sports hall on the College site. The proposed development comprises the refurbishment of, and extension to, the existing Sports Hall which is located within the north-west of the College campus. The College and the School have arrived at two proposals that work in conjunction with one another to deliver a set of College, School and Community facilities.
The selected material palette has been chosen with the aspiration of creating a legacy. Longevity has been sought through the use of robust materials which suit the use of the buildings. The design ethos has been heavily informed by the existing site conditions and material palette which has been proposed for the various buildings across the wider masterplan.
Architecturally we have created an elongated form which reaches towards the site boundary and overlooks Chertsey Road. The extension of the building creates a visible connection to the wider area and provides the prime opportunity for branding of the College and its buildings. This facility stands at the gateway into the site and significantly presents itself and the College brand at its forefront to pedestrians and vehicles.
